You can rent a self-managed Linux VPS with root access, 2–4 GB of RAM and NVMe storage for a few euros or dollars a month. The short answer
Which budget VPS to pick depends on how you pay and where your users are:
- Pick AlphaVPS for the best month-to-month value in Europe and the US. €2.99 a month buys 2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM and 30 GB NVMe, billed monthly.
- Pick VPSDime if RAM matters most. Its $5 Linux plan has 4 GB of dedicated RAM, billed monthly.
- Pick Hostinger if you want a polished panel and can prepay. KVM 1 is $6.49 a month on a 24-month term, renewing at $11.99.
- Pick Friendhosting, FirstByte or Profitserver if you need a server in a particular country.
- Pick VDSka, 4VPS or UltraVDS if you pay in rubles or need a Moscow server; their sites and contracts are in Russian.
- Pick RoseHosting if you don't want to be the sysadmin. It costs $43.99 a month, but its team runs the server.

How to choose a cheap VPS
Compare each entry plan on the same points:
- Price model. A month-to-month price is what you actually pay if you cancel early. A "per month" price that needs 12–48 months upfront is a different deal; check the term and renewal price.
- vCPU. On most cheap plans CPU is shared (fair-share). Fine for a website or bot; sustained full load belongs on dedicated cores.
- RAM. The real constraint for Docker, databases and WordPress. 512 MB suits a tiny service; 2–4 GB a small production app.
- Storage type and size. NVMe is faster than SATA SSD, which is faster than HDD.
- Bandwidth. Look for the monthly traffic allowance and the port speed. "Unmetered" on a shared 100 Mbit/s port is not the same as several TB on a fast port.
- Locations. Put the server near your users.
- Managed vs unmanaged. Every plan here except RoseHosting is self-managed: you install, patch and secure the server.
- Payment, refunds and rules. Check that your card or wallet is accepted, the refund window, and the acceptable-use policy: most budget hosts ban mining and public VPN or proxy services.

Hostinger: a polished VPS if you can prepay
Hostinger's KVM VPS runs on AMD EPYC with NVMe and root access, managed from hPanel with a Docker manager and API. KVM 1 gives 1 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe and 4 TB of traffic, and KVM 2 doubles that for $8.79 a month.
The catch is the price model. The $6.49 rate needs 24 months paid upfront, the VPS page shows no month-to-month price, and the plan renews at $11.99. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee, but VPS refunds are limited to one per 180 days and crypto payments are not refundable. Details in the Hostinger review.
AlphaVPS and VPSDime: the most server per euro, month to month
AlphaVPS is a Bulgarian provider running since 2013 on its own network. The cheap VPS line starts at €2.99 a month for 2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 30 GB NVMe and 3 TB, and C4G gives 4 GB RAM for €3.99. Every plan gets IPv4, a /64 IPv6 and a port up to 10 Gbit, in Sofia, Nuremberg, London, New York, Dallas, Los Angeles or Seattle; pay by card, PayPal or crypto. Downsides: fair-share vCPU, manual order review (ID may be requested), and a 14-day money-back only on an unused first order. See the AlphaVPS review.
VPSDime is the RAM-per-dollar pick: $5 a month for 2 vCPU, 4 GB of dedicated ECC RAM, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB on a 10 Gbps uplink, in four US cities, London and Amsterdam. It takes cards, PayPal, Alipay, PIX, USDT and more. It is strictly self-managed: ticket support only, help with your software is best-effort, and backups cost $5 a month. The refund window is just 72 hours on your first service. More in the VPSDime review.
Friendhosting, FirstByte and Profitserver: many countries for little money
Friendhosting (Bulgaria, since 2009) sells NVMe VDS in Greece, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, the USA, Japan, Brazil and many more. Micro+ is €3.99 for 1 vCPU, 512 MB and 10 GB NVMe; Start doubles the RAM for €4.99. The public "wvds" code takes 20% off the first month. No trial and no stated SLA. See the Friendhosting review.
FirstByte has the lowest entry prices here: on its English site a starter KVM VPS is €1.52 a month in Moscow and €2.75 in Helsinki, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Madrid, Sofia, New York or Singapore. Starters have 768 MB RAM and a 100 Mbit/s port. Weak points: a 99% uptime target and refunds that need a signed request with a passport copy. Read the FirstByte review.
Profitserver offers KVM VPS in 15+ countries plus Russia, from 290 RUB a month in the Netherlands (the English site advertises from $2.9). Traffic is unmetered, but the 100 Mbit/s channel is shared, with only 30–50 Mbit/s guaranteed. Details in the Profitserver review.
VDSka, 4VPS and UltraVDS: ruble prices and Russian-language support
Built for Russian-speaking customers: good value if you pay in rubles or need low latency inside Russia.
VDSka runs KVM VPS on its own hardware in Moscow, Finland, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and the USA. The starter plan is 490 RUB a month (shown as $4.9 on the English version) for 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 15 GB SSD and 3 TB of traffic, with free daily backups. Monthly orders are refunded pro rata, and it accepts international cards and crypto. See the VDSka review.
4VPS has the widest map: 35 countries from Australia to Brazil, with NVMe and AMD EPYC in the Netherlands and Germany from 590 RUB per 30 days. Billing can be hourly. The site and contract are in Russian, and it does not say whether foreign cards work. Read the 4VPS review.
UltraVDS runs Hyper-V servers with Windows or Linux in its own Tier III data center in Moscow, rentable from one day. The promo UltraLite plan is 135 RUB a month with 512 MB RAM, for light tasks; Windows licenses cost extra. Moscow is the only location, and payment is by Russian-gateway cards, YooMoney or bank transfer. More in the UltraVDS review.
RoseHosting: when you'd rather pay for a managed server
If you don't want to handle updates, firewalls and backups yourself, look at a managed host. RoseHosting's NVME 2 plan costs $43.99 a month ($39.59 paid yearly) for 2 dedicated Xeon cores, 2 GB DDR5 ECC RAM, 50 GB NVMe and unmetered traffic. Support, backups and migrations are included, and the price does not rise on renewal. The trade-off: one US data center (St. Louis) and a much higher bill. See the RoseHosting review.
What a $5 VPS is good for, and its limits
A budget VPS runs a small website, a bot, a staging environment or a self-hosted tool well. It is a poor fit for sustained heavy CPU work, mining or a public proxy or VPN service, which nearly every host here prohibits.
This guide compares listed specs, not benchmarks. Start on monthly billing and prepay for a year only once the server has proved itself. For GPU workloads, see our guide to the best GPU cloud for AI. More providers are listed among our best hosting and cloud services.
