Which car rental site should you pick?

All four sites are brokers: they compare offers from rental companies, take your booking and hand you a voucher, while the car, the rental agreement and the deposit come from the company at the desk. They differ in who they list and how you pay:

  • DiscoverCars if you want the widest search with free changes until shortly before the trip: 1,000+ suppliers at 50,000+ locations in 164 countries, free cancellation up to 48 hours before pick-up, and 24/7 support in 15+ languages. Under its terms, a cancellation is refunded as Booking Credit rather than cash.
  • EconomyBookings if you want the same 48-hour rule with the option of a cash refund: 600+ suppliers at 20,000+ locations in 180+ countries, refunds land in your E-Wallet and can be withdrawn to your card free of charge.
  • QEEQ if you care most about how and when you pay: pay in full online, pay at the counter, or hold a prepaid rate for $1, with cards, Apple Pay, iDEAL, PIX or crypto.
  • Localrent if you are going somewhere the big chains are thin (the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Balkans) or want a small local company: you pay only a 15-20% advance online and the rest when you get the keys.

None of the four publishes a fixed price list, so if price is all that matters, run the same dates on two of them.

How car rental booking sites work

A car rental booking site is a middleman between you and the rental company. You search once, see offers from many companies side by side, and book. The site takes some or all of the payment online and sends a voucher; at the desk you sign the rental company's own contract, show your licence and ID, and leave a deposit on a card.

That split matters when something goes wrong. The booking site handles cancellations and refunds of what you paid it, and support for the booking. The rental company decides on the deposit, age rules, fuel and mileage policy and whether to release the car. All four sites say so in their terms, and QEEQ adds that it cannot refund money you paid directly to the rental provider.

How to choose: what we compared

Facts in this guide come from each site's own pages and terms and from our reviews, read in October 2026:

  • Coverage. How many suppliers and countries the site searches, and whether it lists small local companies.
  • Payment model. Full prepayment, part online and part at the desk, or nothing until pick-up. Less upfront means less at risk; QEEQ says paying in full online is about 10-15% cheaper than paying at the counter.
  • Free cancellation and refunds. The window (48 hours, 7 days, or rate-specific) and how the money comes back: cash to your card, or credit for a future booking.
  • Deposit and card rules. Most rental companies want a credit card in the main driver's name at the desk, whatever you used to pay online. That is the most common reason a booked car is refused.
  • Excess cover. DiscoverCars and EconomyBookings sell a Full Coverage add-on that reimburses the excess after damage or theft; QEEQ sells its own insurance. None of these replaces the rental company's collision damage waiver, so the desk can still hold a deposit.
  • Support. 24/7 matters when you land late.

The table's starting-price column says how you pay rather than a figure, because every price is a live quote for your dates.

DiscoverCars: the widest search with 24/7 support

DiscoverCars, run by Travel Drive GmbH in Zug, Switzerland, searches 1,000+ rental companies at 50,000+ locations in 164 countries, in 35 languages, with Android and iOS apps. The DiscoverCars homepage says quoted prices include all mandatory fees and taxes, and if you enter the driver's age, the young-driver fee is part of the total.

Depending on the offer, you prepay in full, prepay part, or pay on arrival. Changes and cancellations are free up to 48 hours before pick-up. The DiscoverCars terms say how that money comes back: as Booking Credit valid for three years, with leftover credit refundable in cash within one year. Bookings made or cancelled less than 48 hours before pick-up are not refunded, except for Full Coverage.

Full Coverage reimburses the excess for accidents, theft, vandalism, towing, lost keys and misfuelling up to the limit on your voucher.

Discover Cars search results for Lisbon Airport: car classes from EUR 16.50 and offers with total price for 8 days and free cancellation
Discover Cars search results for Lisbon Airport, October 2026

Pick it if you want the most suppliers in one search and round-the-clock help. The downside: a free cancellation gives you credit, not cash, by default. Details in our DiscoverCars review.

EconomyBookings: 48-hour cancellation with cash withdrawals

EconomyBookings has operated since 2008 and is run by Booking Group Corporation Ltd. in Latvia. Its homepage lists 600+ suppliers and 20,000+ airport and city locations in 180+ countries, with supplier ratings shown in the results.

Most car bookings can be cancelled free up to 48 hours before pick-up. The EconomyBookings terms credit the refund to your E-Wallet as BookingCredit, which you can withdraw to the original payment method free of charge or keep for a future booking. Cancel through EconomyBookings, not the supplier, or the refund rules don't apply. If the price of a fully prepaid booking drops, EconomyBookings may rebook it and put the difference in your E-Wallet, provided you are registered.

Its Full Coverage add-on reimburses damage and theft excess, including bodywork, glass and tyres, up to €1,700, with claims due within 30 days after the rental. You can pay online with a debit card or Affirm, but the desk requires a physical credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit.

Pick it if you want a large search and the option of cash back on a cancellation. The downside: support runs 24/5, not 24/7. More in our EconomyBookings review.

QEEQ: the most ways to pay

QEEQ, launched in 2017 and run by Qompass Voyage Limited in Hong Kong (bookings are contracted through its Irish subsidiary), says it searches 1,000+ suppliers at 110,000+ locations in 200+ countries.

Its strength is payment. The QEEQ payment page offers three options: Pay Now, which it says saves about 10-15% against paying at the counter; Pay at counter, with nothing paid online; and One-Dollar Freeze, which reserves a car for $1 with the rest paid before pick-up. It takes cards, Apple Pay, local methods such as iDEAL and PIX, and BTC, ETH and other coins through BitPay, and says it charges no transaction fees. Registered members can turn on Price Drop Protector, which refunds the difference if the price falls after booking.

Cancellation follows the policy shown for your rate: free, a fee after a set date, or non-cancellable. Bookings can't be edited after confirmation; you cancel where allowed and book again. Support runs 24/7 by phone, chat, WhatsApp and email.

Pick it if you want to pay at the counter or lock an early rate for $1. The downside: cancellation terms vary by rate, so read them before you pay. See our QEEQ review.

Localrent: local companies and a small advance

Localrent, run by Renot Software OÜ in Estonia since 2011, does the opposite of the big comparison sites: it lists small local rental companies, often with one office and a few dozen cars, rather than global chains. Its destination list covers about 60 countries, with a focus on places like Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Montenegro, Albania, Turkey, Cyprus and Greece, plus Spain, Portugal, the UAE, Thailand, Vietnam and Morocco. In some of them there are separate listings of cars with no deposit.

You pay an advance of 15-20% of the price online and the rest to the rental company when you get the keys. The price, insurance and extras are fixed in your voucher. The Localrent free cancellation page allows free cancellation at least 7 days before pick-up (30 days for luxury cars and crossovers), and up to 24 hours before pick-up for cars marked with a shield icon. Cancel later and the advance goes to the rental company.

Localrent search results for Podgorica, Montenegro: quick filters such as no deposit and no credit card, and top-pick cars from $15 a day
Localrent car rental results for Montenegro (Podgorica), October 2026

Pick it if you travel off the chain-rental map or want little money upfront. The downside: the standard free-cancellation window is a week, not 48 hours, and the call center works 7 AM to 4 PM (GMT+1). Read our Localrent review.

Before you book: deposit, excess and cancellation

  • Bring the right card. Unless the listing says otherwise, have a credit card in the main driver's name with room for the deposit. DiscoverCars notes that many suppliers take Visa or Mastercard debit cards, but EconomyBookings' terms require a physical credit card at the desk.
  • Enter the real driver's age. Young-driver fees and age limits are set by each rental company; entering the age up front puts the fee in the total on DiscoverCars and EconomyBookings.
  • Know how refunds come back. Credit (DiscoverCars), an E-Wallet you can withdraw (EconomyBookings), your card (QEEQ), or the advance only (Localrent).
  • Decide on excess cover before the desk. A broker's Full Coverage add-on reimburses you after the fact; the desk may still block a deposit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest car rental booking site?

None of these sites is always cheapest, because each price is a live quote from the rental companies it lists. Search the same dates on two of them. QEEQ says paying online with Pay Now is about 10-15% cheaper than paying at the counter.

DiscoverCars or EconomyBookings: which is better?

Both cancel free up to 48 hours before pick-up. DiscoverCars searches more suppliers (1,000+ in 164 countries) and has 24/7 support, but refunds cancellations as Booking Credit. EconomyBookings lists 600+ suppliers in 180+ countries and lets you withdraw refunds to your card, with support 24/5.

Can I rent a car without a credit card?

Sometimes. Many rental companies require a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit, and EconomyBookings' terms make it mandatory at the desk. DiscoverCars says many suppliers accept Visa or Mastercard debit cards, and Localrent has no-deposit and no-credit-card filters in some destinations.

Which site lets me pay at the desk?

QEEQ offers Pay at counter with nothing paid online, and DiscoverCars has pay-on-arrival offers. Localrent takes a 15-20% advance online and the rest at pick-up.

Is Full Coverage from a booking site the same as insurance?

No. DiscoverCars and EconomyBookings Full Coverage reimburse the excess you pay the rental company after damage or theft, up to a limit (€1,700 at EconomyBookings). They don't replace the rental company's collision damage waiver, so the desk can still hold a deposit.
