What is Tuta?
Tuta is a privacy-focused email provider, formerly known as Tutanota. The project was started in 2011 by Arne Möhle and Matthias Pfau, and the service is operated by Tutao GmbH, Hanover, Germany. The suite includes Tuta Mail (with password-protected emails for recipients outside Tuta), Tuta Calendar and encrypted contacts.
According to Tuta, all data is end-to-end encrypted with post-quantum cryptography, and all clients are open source on GitHub. Apps are available for Android (including F-Droid), iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux and the web. Servers are in Germany, and two-factor authentication is available on every plan.

The free plan is limited to one calendar and three labels and has no catch-all or autoresponder. Paid plans add unlimited calendars and labels, offline support, unlimited search, scheduled sending and priority email support. Family members can be added at €3 per user per month on Revolutionary or €8 on Legend.
Business plans are priced per user, excluding taxes: Essential €6/month yearly (50 GB), Advanced €8/month yearly (500 GB) and Unlimited €12/month yearly (1,000 GB).
Subscriptions bought through the Apple App Store or Google Play cost slightly more because of store fees.
Tuta referral program terms
Tuta runs a refer-a-friend program for its customers. Under the terms Tuta published:
- A friend who signs up through a referral link and subscribes for one year gets one additional free month: 13 months instead of 12.
- The referrer receives Tuta credit worth 25% of the friend's payments in the first month, including the first payment. The credit can be used for Tuta invoices only and is not paid out.
- Every Tuta customer finds a personal link under Admin Settings → Refer a friend, and there's no limit on invites.
- The program is meant for inviting people you know. Tuta may end contracts with anyone who spams or bulk-mails referral links. Its terms also forbid using a Tuta account to send emails that advertise a referral system.
You can still create a free account through a referral link, but the extra month applies only to a yearly paid plan.
Who it's for, payment and limits
Tuta suits people who want a mailbox and calendar that the provider can't read, and small teams that need encrypted email on their own domain. Before you sign up, know these limits:
- Free accounts are deleted after more than six months without a login, and Tuta doesn't recycle addresses.
- Custom domains, aliases and most productivity features need a paid plan.
- Payment methods: Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards, PayPal, and app-store billing. Tuta gift cards can be bought with cash or cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, Monero) via Proxystore. Direct bank transfer is available only to EU business customers.
- Private customers who sign up online have a statutory 14-day right of withdrawal under Tuta's terms.
Tuta doesn't state any country restrictions on signup.
